Dr. Courtney W. Shropshire was the founder and first President of Civitan International. Following his death in 1965, the Civitan International Foundation established the Dr. Courtney W. Shropshire Scholarship Program in his honor. Each year, the interest earned from the Shropshire Scholarship fund is used to provide these awards. The scholarship fund is currently benefited by the Civitan International Fellows Programs and direct contributions.

How Much Is It Worth?

The program includes scholarship levels with the highest set at $5,000. The qualifying applicants will be awarded a dollar amount based off of the natural break in scores and Civitan International will accept as many applicants as our budget allows using this process. Shropshire Scholarships are only to be used for school-billed expenses and will be paid directly to the institution of the recipient’s choice. Scholarships can be redeemed immediately but do expire the December AFTER the year they are awarded (i.e. Scholarship is awarded in April 2020 and expires December 2021).

Who Is Eligible?

Candidates MUST

  • be enrolled in or planning to enroll in a degree or certificate program at an accredited community college, vocational school, four-year college or graduate school
  • be a Civitan, Campus Civitan, or Junior Civitan AND must have been a member for at least two years.
  • NOT have received a Shropshire Scholarship less than 2 years prior to applying again
  • Submit the COMPLETED application by January 30, 2021 at 5:00 pm CST

What Does The Application Consist Of?

The application is an all online, 3 part process. First, you will answer questions to see if you are eligible to apply. Then you will fill out personal information, educational information, and answer questions related to each of the judging categories (see below). Lastly, you will be required to obtain 3 letters of recommendation: your Junior or Campus club’s advisor, an adult Civitan, and a non-Civitan/non-family member (If you are a current adult Civitan, you should submit 2 letters from a fellow adult Civitan and 1 letter from a non-Civitan/non-family member). Instead of uploading the letter yourself, you will submit their email addresses and they will log in to submit the letter on your behalf. That’s it!

*This system allows you to work on this application over time. You can save your work and log out at any time and when you log back in, it will pick back up where you left off!

How Will My Application Be Judged?

Candidates are judged by a scholarship selection committee appointed by Civitan International. The decisions of the selection committee are FINAL and NOT subject to review. Civitan International has established the following criteria for awarding points when judging the various aspects of the application.

    • Civitan Involvement (40 points)
    • Personal Statement Essay (30 points)
    • Academic Goals & Achievements (20 points)
    • Community/School Activities (10 points)

When Will I Know If I Received The Scholarship?

The scholarship selection committee will begin reviewing the applications in February and our aim is to have the results sent out in late March/early April. You will be emailed a letter informing you of the committee’s decision to the address you provide on the application.
