SHROPSHIRE
SCHOLARSHIPS
Dr. Courtney W. Shropshire was the founder and first President of Civitan International. Following his death in 1965, the Civitan International Foundation established the Dr. Courtney W. Shropshire Scholarship Program in his honor. Each year, the interest earned from the Shropshire Scholarship fund is used to provide these awards. The scholarship fund is currently benefited by the Civitan International Fellows Programs and direct contributions.
Applications open on December 1 and are DUE JANUARY 31 at 5:00 PM CST
How Much Is It Worth?
The program includes scholarship levels with the highest possible award being $5,000. The qualifying applicants will be awarded a dollar amount based off of the natural break in scores and Civitan International will accept as many applicants as our budget allows using this process. Shropshire Scholarships are only to be used for school-billed expenses and will be paid directly to the institution of the recipient’s choice. Scholarships can be redeemed immediately but do expire the December AFTER the year they are awarded (i.e. Scholarship is awarded in April 2024 and expires December 2025).
Who Is Eligible?
Any Civitan, Campus Civitan, or Junior Civitan who has been a member for 2 years and is enrolled or planning to enroll in a degree or certificate program at an accredited community college, vocational school, four-year college or graduate school is eligible to apply for a Shropshire Scholarship.
What Does The Application Consist Of?
The application is an all online, 2 part process. First, you will fill out personal information, educational information, and answer questions related to each of the judging categories (see below). Lastly, you will be required to obtain 3 letters of recommendation: your Junior or Campus club’s advisor, an adult Civitan, and a non-Civitan/non-family member (If you are a current adult Civitan, you should submit 2 letters from fellow adult Civitans and 1 letter from a non-Civitan/non-family member). You will have your references send their letters to you, and you will upload to your application.
*This system DOES NOT allow you to work on this application over time. If you are not ready to submit when you start the application, we suggest that you copy and paste the questions into your own document and then copy and paste your answers back when you are ready to submit.
How Will My Application Be Judged?
Candidates are judged by a scholarship selection committee appointed by Civitan International. The decisions of the selection committee are FINAL and NOT subject to review. Civitan International has established the following criteria for awarding points when judging the various aspects of the application.
- Civitan Involvement (40 points)
- Personal Statement Essay (30 points)
- Academic Goals & Achievements (20 points)
- Community/School Activities (10 points)
When Will I Know If I Received The Scholarship?
The scholarship selection committee will begin reviewing the applications in February and our aim is to have the results sent out in April. You will be emailed a letter informing you of the committee’s decision to the address you provide on the application.
Additional Scholarship Opportunities
Students who are members of a Junior Civitan or Campus Civitan club who fall within the geographical boundaries of the former North Carolina District East are eligible for an additional scholarship from the NCDE fund. All students who are eligible for this additional scholarship must first apply for a Shropshire Scholarship. After all Shropshire Scholarship applications are judged by the scholarship selection committee, the eligible applicants’ scores will be compiled separately and recipients will be selected based off of their scores. Students are eligible (but not guaranteed) to receive both a Shropshire Scholarship and an NCDE scholarship in any given year. For additional questions about the NCDE scholarship or to learn if you are eligible, please contact mallory@civitan.org.
